Events >> Memorial Picnic for Rumaiza Wojnar, Sept 11, 1999

Tricia McMahon and Cheryl Maloney, both of whom are officers of the HERS Breast Cancer Foundation, orchestrated a Memorial Picnic in celebration of their dear friend and colleague Rumaiza. Rumaiza died August 1, 1999 due to the metastasis of breast cancer, and was buried the next day in accordance with her family’s religious tradition.

Because there had not been the opportunity for friends in the S.F. Bay Area to attend her burial, Tricia and Cheryl, along with Rumaiza’s husband Mike facilitated a memorial gathering on Saturday, September 11th. Friends and family came together at Westover Winery in Niles Canyon, Fremont to celebrate Rumaiza’s presence in their life. It was a beautiful day and deeply meaningful for all of us to connect with each other in honor of our mutual friend.

Gayla Wilson, a HERS volunteer and graphic designer, designed special wine labels using Rumaiza’s photo. Commemorative bottles of Chardonnay and Cabernet were available in her honor.

Rumaiza was a thoughtful, gracious and immensely talented woman whose care and creativity touched many lives. She will be missed forever.
