The Founding Steps of the American Institute of Architecture

For over 100 years, the American Institute of Architecture contains members that are licensed professional architects with a high value of impact. The main office is located in Washington, D.C., and has been offering many different services catering to architects and their business structures for a number of years. The promising organization works with the educational architectural systems, government practices and redevelopment structures within the community. They also work with members of the overall design team to assist in overseeing the building industry. The CEO is Robert Ivy and the President is Thomas Vonier. They work together to help continue the status and position of the historical, high-held reputation offered at the American Institute of Architecture.

The history that led to AIA is quite remarkable and involves 13 different members that came together to build the organization into a highly reputable and honorable institute. They got together in 1857 to incorporate and promote the architectural status and development of licensed architects all over the world. They constructed a constitution of bylaws that would provide a certain amount of standards that each member would need to abide by as well as work to promote a high professional status to its clients. Although the organization has been called the American Institute of Architects for many years, it was called the New York Society of Architects at first. Soon after, they decided to change their name to the American Institute of Architecture and began to conduct their professional practices that have carried out through history for many years. By 1860, architects all over the world were asking to join the AIA. By 1880, many members from cities such as St. Louis, Indianapolis and Chicago had joined. Prior to the organization, many architects could easily claim their status. That changed with the laws that were made by the organization with the induction of licensed architects only.

The AIA boasts more than 90,000 architects involved in the organization that are licensed and committed. They must follow the code of ethics and the professional presence that the foundation stands for. They also hold a wide variety of members that are categorized into five different memberships. Each member must either be an architect member, associate member, international associate members, emeritus members and allied members. There is no membership status for students, however, they are able to become members and can participate in the chapters of the student membership section.https://www.youtube.com/user/AIANational
