First Annual Keep Abreast - Walking Together for Her - 2000

October 7, 2000

There was a total of 600 people in attendance, 500 of whom participated in the 5K run/walk.  Also contributing were the 150 incredible volunteers.  Our health/non-profit exposition was also very successful, along with live music provided by Patty and Abigail.  A special thank you to Dominic Dutra - Master of Ceremonies, for his caring and enthusiastic spirit.

We are grateful for the participants, contributors and corporate sponsors who made this first annual event so successful.

Together we raised $37,719.76 (cash total) and $57,896.05 (in-kind goods and services) for a combined value of $95,615.81.

What a tremendous success for our community!

For many of us, one of the most important aspects of the event was the Community Spirit. The energy of everyone present that morning, the ambiance of Coyote Hills Regional Park, the beauty of doves being released by each woman who has faced breast cancer, then circling over and around us to the music of "The Wind Beneath My Wings," created a heartfelt event.

Our honorary co-chairs -- Becky Rebello and Bernie Dutra (at left) -- gave compelling presentations from the stage to begin our Opening Ceremony.

Everyone in attendance was deeply moved and will forever remember Becky inviting all of us to a moment of silence in honor of all those who have faced breast cancer "whether they are with us in body or spirit."

Becky's courage, as well as her struggle, further enunciates the meaning and urgency of our work.  As many of our supporters know, Becky Rebello passed away on October 22, 2000 just two weeks after the event.  She will be in our hearts always, as we continue to move forward in providing support and advocacy for women and their loved ones.
